Barkhad Abdi was working as a simple limo driver in Minneapolis, hustling day in and day out just to make ends meet. He had absolutely NO acting experience. He had NO formal training. He had NO connections in Hollywood. But when he saw an open casting call for Somali actors in the Tom Hanks blockbuster Captain Phillips, he didn’t make excuses. He stepped up!
He remained vigilant, ever ready to seize a fantastic opportunity out of thin air. He auditioned and incredibly landed the role of the fierce Somali pirate leader. Fortune favours the prepared, and he who dares wins!
Abdi was paid just $65,000 for his raw, gripping performance in the 2013 film, a movie that would go on to gross a staggering $218 million worldwide.
Did he let the initial taste of Hollywood glamour stop his hustle? Absolutely not. A person must keep on grinding! After filming wrapped, Abdi quietly returned to Minneapolis and went right back to working at his brother’s mobile phone shop. He needed money to survive while the movie was still in post-production.
But then, everything changed when Captain Phillips premiered.
His performance sent shockwaves across the globe, receiving massive international acclaim. This former limo driver was suddenly nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, WON a prestigious BAFTA, and received nominations for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award!
Imagine having absolutely zero acting experience, landing your very first role, and winning heavyweight awards that many professional actors spend their entire lives chasing!
Yet, the journey wasn’t instantly easy. Even while walking the world’s most glamorous red carpets and receiving international recognition, Abdi was still struggling financially behind the scenes. He had to rely on studio allowances and borrowed clothes just to make it through awards season. But he never folded. He weathered the storm and has since built a rock-solid, steady career, appearing in major films such as Blade Runner 2049, Eye in the Sky, and Good Time.
