LONDON — In a landmark shift for global military posture, the United Kingdom has actively engaged in space-based electronic warfare, deploying ground-based jamming systems and standing up a dedicated space combat unit to target hostile satellites.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) unveiled No. III Space Effects Squadron, Britain’s first operational unit explicitly tasked with offensive and defensive space operations. The new squadron is equipped to “disrupt, degrade, and deny” foreign adversary satellite capabilities using advanced electronic warfare, including high-powered signal jamming.
A Secret Electronic War Above the Clouds
Defense sources revealed that British forces have quietly operated ground-based jamming systems over the past year to neutralize space-borne surveillance and targeting threats from rival nations.
The escalation follows repeated warnings from UK Space Command regarding adversary operations in orbit. Russia and other hostile powers have frequently attempted to jam UK military communications and satellite navigation systems. In response, London has moved from passive defense to active electronic counter-operations.
“Space no longer supports operations from the sidelines. It’s a domain of direct competition, where our military advantage can be won or lost.”
— Air Chief Marshal Sir Harv Smyth, Chief of the Air Staff

Inside Britain’s New Space Defense Architecture
Speaking at the inaugural UK Space Power Conference in London, British officials outlined a multi-layered military space command structure:
| Unit / Facility | Operational Mandate |
| No. I Space Operations Squadron | Orbital surveillance and domain awareness. |
| No. II Space Warning Squadron | Early warning detection against missile launches and space threats. |
| No. III Space Effects Squadron | Active electronic warfare, signal jamming, and orbital threat disruption. |
| RAF Fylingdales | Continuous radar monitoring and deep-space threat tracking. |
“Deterrence in Space”
UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting emphasized that Britain’s growing reliance on space for civilian telecommunications, navigation, and defense makes orbital assets a high-priority target.
Unlike destructive anti-satellite missiles, which generate hazardous debris fields in low Earth orbit, electronic warfare allows military operators to disable target communications, command signals, and radar feeds without firing a single physical projectile. The UK government maintained that it remains committed to international agreements barring destructive orbital missile tests, positioning its electronic warfare push as a non-kinetic, responsible method of space defense.
