Nigel Farage has secured a resounding victory in the Clacton by-election, taking 63.3% of the vote. However, the Reform UK leader was notably absent from his own victory declaration, and his return to Westminster is already clouded by reopening police investigations and resuming parliamentary probes.

The “Stunt” By-Election: Why Major Parties Boycotted
The Clacton by-election was triggered by Farage himself in July 2026, when he unexpectedly resigned his seat. Facing a parliamentary standards investigation over a £5 million gift from cryptocurrency billionaire Christopher Harborne, Farage stepped down, claiming he wanted to let the voters decide in a “people versus the establishment” contest.
The major Westminster parties: Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens refused to participate. They dismissed the by-election as a costly “stunt” (estimated to have cost taxpayers £250,000) and a “pantomime” designed to deflect from the scandals engulfing him. Because the main parties opted not to play ball, Farage faced a record-breaking 33 alternative candidates—predominantly independents and novelty candidates. His main challenger turned out to be the satirical space alien, Count Binface, who came in second with 26.9% of the vote.
Why Farage Skipped the Celebration
Despite securing 22,239 votes, Farage did not attend the official count at the Clacton Leisure Centre. He claimed that Essex Police had warned him of a “credible threat” and an “organised campaign to disrupt and degrade the result”. However, reports indicated that no other candidates were advised by the police to avoid the count.
The Reopened Police Investigation
Adding to the drama, counter-terrorism police have recently reopened an investigation into an April 2025 incident where a lit incendiary device was pushed through the letterbox of Farage’s London home.
This development is tied to the tragic ongoing murder investigation of Ann Widdecombe, the former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson who was found dead at her Devon home on July 9. While investigating Widdecombe’s death, Counter Terrorism Policing London discovered a “relevant” line of inquiry regarding the 2025 attempted firebombing at Farage’s house that was previously missed. This has led to a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) to investigate a staff member’s failure to pursue this lead originally.
What Happens Now? Will Authorities Respect the Voters?
Farage is officially once again the Member of Parliament for Clacton. The authorities and the House of Commons fully respect the electoral outcome, and Farage will take his seat.
However, winning an election does not grant immunity from parliamentary rules. Now that he has returned to Parliament, the standards watchdog investigation which was paused upon his resignation will immediately resume.
What Happens to Farage Next?
Farage faces intense scrutiny over the undeclared £5 million Harborne donation, as well as separate allegations regarding undisclosed financial support from his long-time aide George Cottrell. Farage maintains he did nothing wrong, arguing these were unconditional personal gifts received before he became an MP.
If the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards finds that Farage breached the rules, he could face suspension. Should he be suspended from the House of Commons for more than 10 sitting days or 14 calendar days, it would automatically trigger a recall petition in Clacton. If 10% of eligible voters sign that petition, Farage would be unseated again, potentially forcing yet another by-election before the end of the year
