THE BEAST OF ABA: How Osisikankwu Turned a Thriving City into a Blood-Soaked Ghost Town!

Obioma Nwankwo, alias ‘Osisikankwu,’ commanded a merciless army of thousands, kidnapped foreigners, slaughtered cops, and snatched innocent schoolchildren before meeting a violent end in the ‘Evil Forest’!

ABA, NIGERIA — It was a reign of terror that makes Hollywood crime thrillers look like bedtime stories. For three agonizing years, the bustling commercial heartbeat of Abia State was choked by the iron, blood-stained grip of one man: Osisikankwu.

Between 2007 and 2010, this ruthless kingpin didn’t just break the law—he shattered it, transforming Aba into a post-apocalyptic ghost town where the living envied the dead, and no one—absolutely no one—was safe.

A City Paralyzed by Pure Terror

Imagine being so terrified of your own bedroom that you flee into the night to sleep on the cold pews of a church. For the residents of Aba, this wasn’t a nightmare; it was everyday survival. Entire bustling neighborhoods like Ariaria Junction, Umuozuo, and Asa were entirely abandoned, left to rot as families fled for their lives.

Operating a sprawling, lucrative criminal empire stretching all the way to Obigbo in Rivers State, Osisikankwu commanded a heavily armed militia numbering in the thousands. They turned human trafficking and kidnapping into a booming, blood-soaked enterprise.

Heartbreak, Heroism, and High-Stakes Ransoms

Osisikankwu’s hit list spared no one. Politicians, clergy, wealthy tycoons, and innocent bystanders were snatched off the streets like ragdolls.

In one of the most gut-wrenching tales of the era, the gang came for Tochukwu, a man recovering from surgery. In an act of unthinkable bravery, his younger brother, popular Ariaria businessman Chijioke (Igodo), offered himself to the wolves, volunteering to be dragged into the kidnappers’ den in his sick brother’s place. While his family miraculously bought his life back with a ransom, countless others were swallowed by the shadows, never to be seen again.

The warlord’s greed knew no borders. His thugs sparked international panic, snatching three British nationals and a Colombian engineer from a Shell power plant. By 2010, his trophy wall of hostages included Germans, Chinese nationals, and three Nigerian journalists whose freedom was bought for a staggering ₦30 million!

The August Bloodbath

Then came the day the streets of Aba ran red.

On August 24, 2010, a heavily armed death squad, allegedly led by Osisikankwu’s icy lieutenant “Okwute” (Stone), unleashed hell on five banks in the Osisioma area. It wasn’t just a robbery; it was a massacre. Every single police officer and security operative on duty was mercilessly gunned down.

The savagery only escalated. A senior pastor was dragged into the abyss. An Indian businessman was slaughtered. And in a killing that broke the city’s heart, renowned gynecologist and hospital owner Dr. Stanley Uche was abducted and brutally murdered.

The Ultimate Sin: Snatching the Schoolchildren

Even monsters have a breaking point, and Osisikankwu sealed his own doom when he crossed the ultimate line. On September 27, 2010, his gang hijacked a bus and kidnapped 15 innocent pupils from Abayi International School.

The nation erupted in furious outrage.

Osisikankwu tried to spin his barbarism to the press, audaciously claiming his violent crusade was a political statement against the “marginalization” of the Ukwa-Ngwa people. He demanded government attention and begged for “rehabilitation.” But the time for talk was over.

Death in the Evil Forest

Furious at the abduction of the children, President Goodluck Jonathan unleashed the full, unbridled fury of the Nigerian military. The hunt was on.

Following weeks of high-stakes intelligence and relentless military sweeps, heavily armed troops cornered the warlord in his ultimate lair: the notorious Ugwuati Evil Forest.

What followed was a ferocious, lead-spitting gun battle. When the smoke finally cleared over the canopy, the Beast of Aba was dead. His gang scattered like rats, his girlfriend, Ogochi, was slapped in irons, and the military unearthed a horrifying, massive cache of deadly weapons.

The Scars Remain

News of his demise ripped through Aba like wildfire. The monster was dead. Slowly, tentatively, businesses unlocked their doors and families crept back to their abandoned homes.

But a city doesn’t just “get over” three years of living in a war zone. Fortunes were wiped out. Loved ones were buried in closed caskets—or never found at all. The trauma of Osisikankwu’s reign is permanently burned into the soul of Abia State.
